American Pit Bull Terrier (Pit Bull)

History

At the beginning of the 20th century in England, there were several wild in today’s entertainment performances with the participation of animals, for example, the baiting of bulls and bears with dogs. It is for such a fierce and bloody sport that the Pit Bull Terrier breed was created.

In 1935, this type of entertainment was recognized as inhuman and harmful to society, as a result of which it was prohibited at the legislative level. However, in place of one forbidden bloody entertainment, another was immediately created – dog fights, where the Pit Bull Terrier breed also gained immense fame. This is not surprising – powerful jaws, strong muscular body, great endurance and excellent reaction, excellent instincts and fearlessness – all these qualities went down in history along with the pit bull terrier.

Also, an important distinctive feature of pit bull terriers is the reluctance to bite people, which plays a huge role in dog fights. Trainers need to separate animals from time to time, while, at the same time, with a minimal chance of harming themselves – the Pit Bull Terrier in this regard is perhaps the safest dog. Although, of course, with due perseverance, you can train it for security functions, including attacking a person (usually this is done for protection purposes).

After these dogs were brought to America, they began to perform just security functions, to protect households and livestock. Moreover, local American breeders raised a larger variety of the breed than the British. In 1898, the UKC, the British equivalent of the American AKC, named these dogs the American Pit Bull Terrier. AKC decided to recognize the breed in the early 1930s, but under a different name.

In order to separate them from the brutal past – bloody battles, AKC named the breed American Staffordshire Terrier. Since then, the American Staffordshire Terrier has been bred for AKC conformation or dog shows. Differences in the structure of the body and personality of the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier are very small, because in fact, they are one and the same breed.

Description

The American Pit Bull Terrier has the muscular, athletic build typical of this type of dog. It has a slightly more average size, a wide, powerful chest, well-developed muscles (especially if the dog undergoes regular training), and an average length of limbs. The pit bull has folded ears that dock at an early age, like the tail. There is a wide variety of colors for this breed.

Personality

Despite its menacing past and reputation as a ruthless and fearless fighter, the American Pit Bull Terrier breed is the perfect nanny for children. It would seem that it is difficult to believe in it, but they really have great patience in a relationship with a child, and never show aggression. Especially, female pit bull terriers are good at this.

Despite the fact that these dogs do not like to bite people and do it reluctantly, you can rest assured that if someone wants to offend its owner, the pit bull terrier will do everything to stop the offender, and given his strength it will be easy. In short, you shouldn’t try to attack a person with such a dog. It will end badly. First of all – for the attacker.

The owner must make an effort to properly educate the pit bull terrier, here you need to be strict, but fair. Improper and aggressive upbringing can lead to mental disorders of the animal and negative consequences for others.

In the circle of their family, these are very kind, loyal and loving dogs, creating strong bonds with their owners. They love to walk, need physical and intellectual stress, which means that you will need to provide the animal with appropriate training and games.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is smart and understands people well. It is better to “make friends” with cats from an early age. Also, from an early age, you need to teach the dog to obedience, otherwise it will begin to show congenital stubbornness, which is especially pronounced in males.

Training

Early socialization is extremely important for these pets, since, despite their friendliness, they treat strangers with caution. Also, it is necessary to teach commands and achieve the iron execution of the most simple ones. First of all, this concerns the commands to stop the attack, since the pit bull sometimes likes to get involved in a fight with another dog. With a lack of education, it will be difficult to stop the dog, and in such cases, sometimes every second counts.

When training and learning, it is important to always maintain emotional contact with the dog so that he understands the essence and importance of what is happening. It is imperative to encourage her success, if you do not follow the commands, you do not need to shout – just be patient and persistent.
