How to teach the dog tricks

Exciting activities and tasks for the dog do not always have to take place outdoors. You can also teach your dog a lot indoors. Here are three ideas for fun tricks that you can easily teach your dog.

Home performance ready for a circus: throwing the dice

Learn how to use a dice for your dog. In the future, he will be able to take on the role of dice thrower during a game afternoon. This makes for a fun change. All you need to practice is a foam rubber or cloth cube for toddlers. Make sure that the cube is always big enough that the dog cannot swallow it.

Guided by your commands “bring” and “off”, your dog will now roll the dice for you. Don’t forget to give a lot of praise afterwards. If you only ever give your dog the cube for this purpose, your four-legged assistant will soon understand what his job is. You can then gradually replace the commands “Bring” and “Off” with a simple “roll of the dice”.

Floor role easily learned

The role on the floor is also fun for dog and owner. Basic requirements here are the command of “space” and “stay”. The dog first goes “down”, then carefully lay it on its side and fix this position with a “stay”.

If that works, grasp the dog’s paws and gently turn your dog over its back to the other side. Use the command “Roll” or “Turn around” right from the start. A calm trainer and lots of praise are half the battle for this exercise. Once your dog has understood what is going on, the aids will gradually be dismantled. At the end, the command “roll” is sufficient to animate the dog to the demonstration.

Dog brings handkerchief

To teach your dog to bring you a handkerchief, you should proceed as follows: Wrap a treat in a cloth handkerchief and let him sniff it. Put it loosely in your pocket in front of the dog; a corner should hang out.

Encourage the dog to get the treat and give him lots of praise as soon as he pulls on the handkerchief. When he finally got it out of his pocket, the treat falls out as a reward. Support this process again and again with the command “Hatschi”.

As soon as your dog correctly combines the command, reduce the packaged treats until they are finally eliminated entirely. The praise remains, of course! Your dog will become a real attraction when he hands you a handkerchief while a fake “hatschi” is on.
