A small and seemingly unremarkable smooth-haired fox terrier dog, in fact, played a large role in dog breeding. These dogs, along with the Greyhound, were among the first to take part in exhibitions. The Smooth Fox Terrier breed is very significant, as it was the first in the Fox Terrier family to receive official recognition from the Kennel Club in 1875.
The origin story begins around the 18th century – the oldest factual evidence is a portrait of a beloved dog, a fox terrier named Pitch, painted by its owner, Colonel Thornton, in 1790. The ancestors of the smooth-haired fox terrier can be considered the brown terrier and the smooth-haired black terrier (these dogs are now extinct), in addition, there are traces of the bull terrier and the beagle in their DNA.
In the 18-19th century, the smooth-haired fox terrier was widely used for hunting foxes, which, in principle, is clear from the name of the breed (fox, in English means “fox”). They are capable of burrowing open and chasing their prey with surprising tenacity, especially given the small size of this dog. Nowadays, they are rarely brought up for such purposes, at least in the CIS. However, in England, for example, this type of hunting is still popular with some avid hunters.
The Smooth Fox Terrier was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885, and the breed standard was drawn up a year later, in 1886. Among other things, the Smooth Fox Terrier is the “founding father” of many modern terrier breeds. In other words, many terrier breeds descended from the smooth fox terrier. By the way, among hunters of the 18-19th century, dogs with a white coat color were more appreciated, since in the active phase of the hunt, when the foxes were driven out into the open, the dog was easy to see and not accidentally confused with a fox.
This is a small dog with the correct constitution, muscular, fit, not prone to accumulation of excess weight. Paws are of medium length, tail is short, curved up. The neck is slightly longer than average, the muzzle is elongated, the ears hang down on the cheekbones. The color can be pure white, white with black, black and tan or tan markings.
The smooth fox terrier has a very friendly and open nature and usually treats all people well. Regardless of whether it is a stranger or a close family friend, the dog will perceive him normally, and, most likely, will try to make friends in the first hour of communication. If not in the first 10 minutes.
These animals have a huge amount of energy, they love to walk and spend time outdoors in a variety of games and entertainment, including with other dogs. Due to the large amount of internal energy, as well as a tendency to stubbornness, many dog breeders do not recommend getting this breed to inexperienced owners who did not have dogs before.
They are quite smart, have internal independence, but it so happens that internal instincts and the desire to play and fool around, outweigh the mind, the cries of the owner and upbringing. This is especially the case if he smelled an interesting smell, or decided to attack the cat. Children are accepted well if they show respect and do not harm the dog.
The smooth fox terrier is always happy to play, go for a walk, and generally spend time with interest. Since these dogs have strong hunting instincts, it is best to be friends with cats from a very early age. In addition, do not forget about the early socialization of your pet, as the variety of situations with other people, animals, new smells and sounds will make him more developed and open.
Despite its small size, this breed is able to learn various commands, it is notable for its intelligence and intelligence. However, you need to choose the right approach – playfulness, positive attitude, kindness and patience are your best companions in this matter.
In addition, do not forget to make the activities varied, and do not delay them in time, as this can quickly get bored with this breed. The dog will lose focus, you will be nervous, and no training will work. By the way, nerves, screams, beatings should be excluded from the training process.
In general, the Smooth Fox Terrier takes learning well, and finds interest in it, as it is food for the mind and a variety of activities. In addition to training and teaching teams, behavior correction and the development of obedience are definitely required – believe me, this will play a good role for you, and you should not neglect it.
The smooth fox terrier has a short coat that requires little or no maintenance. It is enough to brush your pet once a week. Also, check your dog’s eyes daily for deposits and remember to clean the ears. You need to bathe your animal at least once a week.
