Symptoms of urinary incontinence in bitches

definition

Urinary incontinence or incontinencia urinae is the involuntary discharge of urine from the bladder. It is mostly the result of an endocrine disorder, a neurogenic motor disorder, traumatic damage to the sphincter or a congenital abnormality.

Disease origin and development

The most common reason for urinary incontinence, i.e. for the unconscious and involuntary loss of urine, is a weakness of the internal sphincter of the urethra, with the result that the urethra no longer closes tightly. After the loss of estrogens after castration, there is a reduced activity of the receptors in the bladder and urethra. In the case of a neurogenic disorder, the response to a bladder filling up more and more is interrupted and the command to empty it does not occur. Both together lead to overfilling of the bladder, which finally causes the sphincter to open passively as a result of the increase in pressure.

Clinical picture – symptoms

The animal is no longer able to control urination. Most of the time, the bitch loses urine while she sleeps, so the spots are most often found on her berth.

forecast

The prognosis depends very much on the cause. The healing of neurogenic incontinence, in turn, depends on the underlying disease. The prognosis for endocrine incontinence is very favorable, as there are now various drugs (estrogens, phenylpropanolamine and ephedrine).
